Individual differences in language-related social behaviour: nudging learners in the wild to more exposure and use

This project seeks to understand how individual differences in exposure to and usage of a new language influence language learning. To help us measure exposure and usage we introduce the Experience Sampling Method (ESM) and a smartphone app, the Lang-Track-App, to track learners’ behaviour "in the wild” outside of classrooms. We study the connection between shifts in language skills and changes in exposure and use in social activities in exchange students and recently arrived migrants who all learn Swedish. We also investigate whether we can nudge the same learner groups towards certain activities to enhance learning outcomes.
